In the forum one can reply to messages that have been posted. When replying to a message the message is associated to the original message by creating a conversation. Users can also reply to the e-mail that they have received. When Dithaka, which that runs on James, receive the reply it also associates it with the original message and creates a conversation if it does not exist already. The Message-ID field in the mail header is used for this purpose. The Message-ID filed is stored along with the message in the database.
